Completion works on Kirigiti Stadium is set to delay. Principal Secretary for Public Works, Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Gordon Kihalangwa revealed the report and said that the delays will happen due to the ongoing rainfalls.
“I am pleased with the progress of the stadium. However the ongoing rain is going to pull us back abit, the main reason as to why we visited is to see how we can improve on drainage and sewer issues we have here. Roofing of the stadium is set to commence after the completion of the drainage and sewerage system,” said Gen Kihalangwa.
Kirigiti Stadium
The stadium is one of the oldest sporting and social facility in Kiambu County. The Stadium was originally constructed by the colonial government as cricket grounds. Plans were at an advanced stage to upgrade Kirigiti Stadium to a world-class facility through partnerships with the central government and private organisations.
Sh 140m was allocated for phase one of the project in 2016, with Frema General Contractors Ltd awarded the project. However construction works stalled with nothing tangible to show for the money spent other than an unfinished concrete.
Sports Cabinet Secreatry Amina Mohammed then launched the construction works of the stadium in October 2020. The 16,000 capacity stadium will be built to international level and will have two basketball courts, a swimming pool and an amphitheatre, netball and volleyball courts, a football pitch and an athletics track.
The National Government released Sh 590m for rehabilitation of the stadium. The CS promised that the youths will be given priority in dishing out jobs during the construction of the stadium. Governor Nyoro commended the project and said that the stadium will help decongest stadiums in Nairobi.
