Construction of Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone to commence soon

Construction of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone is set to commence soon. Coast Regional Coordinator John Elung’ata revealed the report and said government agencies which include the National Land Commission, Kenya Ports Authority, national government as well as local leaders are finalizing the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) for Dongo Kundu residents ahead of construction of the SEZ.

“Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone Dream Inches Closer. We have started a validation exercise to vet the beneficiaries of the Dongo Kundu SEZ project from six villages in Likoni. Those who will be affected by the major project will be vetted and rightfully compensated,” said Mr. Elung’ata.

Dongo Kundu SEZ industrial and commercial hub project

The Dongo Kundu SEZ industrial and commercial hub project is a part of a master plan for the development of the Mombasa SEZ that was conceived four years ago. It is designed to be a multi-sectoral zone comprises of Industrial Parks, Free Trade Zones/Free Port, Dongo Kundu Port, Tourism Zone (MICE), Business Service Parks and Commercial and Residential Zone.

Kenyan government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan for its implementation in 2019. Funds to finance the project will be granted to the government of Kenya by her Japan counterpart. About 85.92% of the entire amount will be a loan, while the rest will be a grant.

The Sh 42.5bn project is expected to unlock more than 60,000 jobs in Mombasa, the coastal city of Kenya. It is expected to be executed in phases on a 1,326 hectares piece of land with the first phase projected to be ready by June 2022.

More than 2,000 people from six villages, including Mwangala, Mbuta, Kaya Mtongwe, Tsije, Mrongondoni and Dongo Kundu will be affected by the mega project which will use over 3,000 acres of land.
