Busia Govt endorses Victor Wanyama Academy project

The County government of Busia has offered to support the Victor Wanyama Academy currently under construction. Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong confirmed the report and said the facility will contribute immensely towards the development of sports in the county which is renowned for producing top stars including Wanyama, Mariga, JJ Masiga and many others.

“Our County is full of talents that need to be tapped. I appreciate the efforts put up by the celebrated soccer star of coming up with the Academy,” said the governor.

The academy sits on a 21- acre piece of land at Ekisumo in Nambale Sub County. It aims to nurture artistic and sporting talents of its students while at the same time providing a pathway for academic excellence. The academy intends revolutionise sports training and education in the country while providing key sporting infrastructure to the country.

According to the renowned soccer star Wanyama, the facility is set to have three fields, one mini-stadium and hostels, adding that it will start with football before incorporating other disciplines including life skills for those who don’t like football.

Long term vision

The foundation also has a long term vision of constructing an ultra-modern sports complex. The sporting complex shall be built to international standard of all sporting federations that shall be hosted at the facility. The sports complex shall have both indoor and outdoor sporting arenas.

“The academy will be a professional academy that will help give our youths exposure and sharpen their skills. I believe one day it will help produce a great team that will participate in the Kenya Premier League in a big way,” said Wanyama.

Football Kenya Federation Busia Branch vice chairman Michael Ikolak said they drafted a Sports Bill which has already been forwarded to the County Assembly.
