Construction of a National Police Service Hospital to begin

State proposes Sh6.8bn for trade and industrialization in next budget

Construction works on a National Police Service Hospital is set to commence soon. Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai made the announcement and explained that land near the Inland Container Depot (ICD), which had been identified for the construction of the hospital, was taken by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), hence launch of the project promised by his predecessor Joseph Boinnet.

“We have ongoing plans as part of our development agenda on building an NPS hospital. Construction is to begin soon,” said Inspector Mutyambai.

The issue of a police hospital dates back to March 2016 when Boinnet revealed plans by NPS to construct a 300-bed referral hospital that will cater for both serving and officers who retire honorably just like in the military. Boinnet then said the hospital would be operational in two years (2018). Boinnet, whose tenure came to an end in March 2019, was appointed to the Tourism Ministry as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the same year.

Features of the hospital

The Inspector General affirmed that the project had received necessary approvals and would go on as planned. Upon completion, the Police healthcare facility will be used to treat mainly police officers and the retirees just like Kenya Defence Forces and their Moi Forces hospital.

“The land has been identified and plans have been approved. We have also secured the funds for the construction,” said Mr. Mutyambai.

The construction which will be done through the Government grant and soft loan funding will incorporate supply of medical equipment and hospital information system (installation and three years of maintenance), paperless/modern technology hospital, forensic laboratory, doping test facility and first class emergency centre. The hospital will also have a VIP suite, mortuary, training and education both locally and overseas, operation and maintenance support, according to the advert.
