Construction of Sh 350m Kisumu sports complex commence

Uhuru lays foundation for Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium

Construction works on Kisumu sports complex worth Sh 350m has commenced. This is after the site was handed over to the contractors in an event presided over by Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and deputy secretary in the Ministry of Sports Josephine Onunga.

The sports complex was commissioned two months ago by Sports CS Amina Mohammed. It will be situated at the Kisumu ASK grounds in Mamboleo and named the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium. The facility forms part of the governmentโ€™s plans to promote sports across the country. The deputy secretary emphasized that a county development committee will be updating to Nairobi every day about the status of the project.

โ€œGo back to the drawing board and ensure that the project is complete within the set timelines. Do your part as the contractor and we will do ours to ensure that it becomes a success,โ€ said Josephine Onunga.

Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium

The development will be 30,000 capacity stadium that will have facilities for football, rugby, tennis, hockey among other disciplines. The stadium will have changing rooms, a media centre, a boardroom, modern ablution block and ample parking. It is expected to be completed by mid-next year.

The Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground construction will join the many stadiums that the national government, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, has earmarked for modernization and development. According to Amina Mohamed, Nyayo stadium, which is undergoing refurbishment is almost done and Kasarani stadium is on the course.

The government is also working on a Stadium in Marsabit and the Kipchoge Keino phase one and two in Eldoret. Amaina added that construction of two stadiums is ongoing and at an advanced stage ofย  completion in Meru County while two others are about to begin construction, one in Kiambu County and the other at Narok.

โ€œWe have two stadiums in Kiambu and Narok that we plan to begin working on soon. The one at Kiambu will be the construction of a new stadia while that at Narok will be a modernization of the already existing Narok Stadium.Furthermore, we have the Bukhungu Stadium in the pipeline. We are currently working with Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to see what we can do to bring it up to standards,โ€ said Amina Mohamed.
