A five-storey building that was under construction in Gachie, Kiambu County collapsed. Kiambu police boss Ali Nuno confirmed the report and said at least three people were trapped while several workers managed to escape the rubble, sustaining injuries.
The police also said that is not clear the exact number of people trapped in the debris. A rescue mission is ongoing and no death has been reported. The building was meant to be a residence. Nairobi and Kiambu are among areas experiencing a construction boom with many buildings having more than 10 floors.
Proper supervision
There have been concerns of structures being constructed without proper supervision. Recently nine people died after a crane accident in Nairobi’s Hurlingham area. The machine collapsed as it was being dismantled by the technicians who had completed their work. Witnesses said 10 workers were dismantling the 60-metre crane when it collapsed and trapped the nine in the rubble.
Two Chinese were among the nine who died when the crane collapsed while one worker survived and was rushed to the hospital following the mid-day accident.The injured was treated and discharged and is recuperating at home said.
