Construction of the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu County is nearing completion. Nyanza regional coordinator Magu Mutindika revealed the report and said that plans are underway for the stadium to host year’s Madaraka Day celebrations on June.
“On June 1, Kisumu will host the celebrations at the new stadium, the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, let us prepare to welcome our guests who will include President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga,” he said.
The development will be 30,000 capacity stadium that will have facilities for football, rugby, tennis, hockey among other disciplines. The stadium will have changing rooms, a media centre, a boardroom, modern ablution block and ample parking. It is expected to be completed by mid-next year.
Boost to the county’s economy
The government had allocated Sh 350million for the stadium which will have the main playing field of international standards, 8 lanes running track among others. The state-of the-art Sports Complex will be launched by, President Uhuru Kenyatta
Already, works on Mamboleo Road are ongoing ahead of the event. It is part of the 63km Mamboleo-Miwani-Chemelil-Muhoroni-Kipsitet road being tarmacked at Sh 4.9 billion. The government had awarded the contract to Sinohydro Corporation in a joint venture with Gragab Agencies, according to a March 12 letter from the Kenya National Highways Authority. This came after the National Treasury approved the funds. According to Raila the stadium will provide employment opportunities to the youth.
Mutindika said having the two leaders grace the event will be a boost to the county’s economy. He said the hotel industry is set to benefit from the influx of people who will be attending the celebrations.
