The Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium project in Kisumu County is set to be completed next month. Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa made the announcement and said that construction progress is satisfactory and will enable the county to showcase the state-of-the-art stadium, which is expected to be the conference venue for the upcoming Africities summit in November this year.
“After inspecting the ongoing works, I am convinced that there is satisfactory progress, and the contractor has assured me that the facility will be ready by the end of next month,” said CS Wamalwa.
Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium
The development will be 30,000 capacity stadium that will have facilities for football, rugby, tennis, hockey among other disciplines. The stadium will have changing rooms, a media centre, a boardroom, modern ablution block and ample parking. It is expected to be completed by mid-next year.
The government had allocated Sh 350million for the stadium which will have the main playing field of international standards, 8 lanes running track among others. The state-of the-art Sports Complex will be launched by, President Uhuru Kenyatta during which Gor Mahia will go head-to-head with AFC leopard in soccer duel of its kind in the region.
Africities
The Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground construction will join the many stadiums that the national government, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, has earmarked for modernization and development. According to Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Heritage and Culture Amina Mohamed, Nyayo stadium, which is undergoing refurbishment is almost done and Kasarani stadium is on the course.
Africities is the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa’s flagship Pan-African event that is held every three years in one of the five regions of Africa. Kisumu will become the first intermediary city to host the event which is expected to be attended by more tha 10,000 delegates during the ninth edition of Africities. The government also plans to construct the 63km Kisumu-Mamboleo-Chemelil-Muhoroni road and the stretch leading to the facility ahead of the continental summit.
