The Board of Kenya Railways (KR), representatives of KR management, the Phase 2A SGR EPC Contractor, and the Consultant conducted inspection for Official Acceptance of the completed works of the SGR project.
Construction of the 120 km long Phase 2A SGR Project connecting Nairobi to Naivasha, was launched on September 14, 2017. The line has a 6.2 km bridge over passing the Nairobi National Park; four intermediate stations at Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Maai Mahiu and Suswa, as well as a passing station at Nachu.
Phase 2A SGR Project
The line has three tunnels at Ngong, Nachu and Kimuka with a combined length of 6.6 km. The line ensures passenger traffic as well as freight services which will benefit an inland container facility at Naivasha, where the President has launched the construction works. From this terminal, the cargos would be transported to Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.
The rail project was performed by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and would eventually link the port of Mombasa to Uganda. The works were substantially completed on September 30, 2019, at which point the Taking-Over Certificate was issued, and the line put into operations.
The Project immediately entered into 12 months Defects Notification Period (DNP), which lapsed on September 30, 2020. Inspections for Official Acceptance kicked off on September 30, 2020, by various construction disciplines, and concluded on October 8, 2020 with the signing of Performance Certificate for the Project, at Suswa SGR Station.
In 2017, the first phase of Kenya’s SGR project was opened, linking Nairobi to Mombasa through a 472-km railway line. The project was also implemented by China. The Sh 327bn project was 90% funded by China’s Exim Bank and the government covered the remaining 10% of the costs.
