Kenya’s Tenwek Hospital to set up a cardiothoracic centre

Tenwek Hospital has announced plan to develop a Cardiothoracic Centre in Bomet, in collaboration with Health Facilities Group, LLC and Triad Architects.

The centre aims to be a distinctly Christian center of excellence dedicated to the care of patients with cardiothoracic diseases and the training of Christian African health-care workers to carry on the work in the future.

The new facility will be located 300m west of the main Tenwek Hospital campus. It will and ultramodern center designed for both outpatients and inpatients. It will be a 176 bed-self-contained surgical center within a 4-storey building.

Healing environment

It is composed of 2 interlinked blocks connected through a central core with 3 hospital lifts and a W-shaped ramp and staircases. The facility will be equipped with spaces and facilities such as examination rooms, pharmacy, lab, blood bank, CT and X-ray machines, endoscopy suite, recovery room, training center, conference hall, offices, heart surgery suite, preoperative holding area and a post anesthesia care center and the general wards accommodating 80 patient beds.

The patient wards are designed to provide a healing environment through large floor to ceiling windows which provide soothing picturesque views of the undulating green hills beyond Tenwek valley.

The facility will also feature a noticeable hospital chapel which will be defined by two thick curved concrete running through all floors which mimics a candle flame when interior lights are on at night. This will be from a metaphor inspiration of Christ being the light of the world. Works is expected to commence in early next year.
