A private school in Syokimau, Machakos County, has been forced to close down temporarily after raw sewage spilt into classrooms and the institution’s playing field.
Little Bees Kindergarten and Primary school administration said it was forced to close for three weeks due to the spill caused by the construction of the Nairobi Expressway. The construction of the expressway and the Syokimau Loneview access lane had caused the diversion of untreated sewage into the school.
Petition
“When the sewer is flashed, there is nowhere that the sewage goes to. Therefore it all floods into the school compound. The school is counting losses in millions as a result considering the learners who have left, you know those learners who have left would have been in the school for the next four or five years,” said Lorna Cheptoo.
According to the report, the parliamentary committee on environment, through the intervention of the area Member of Parliament (MP), Patrick Makau, visited the school and demanded the China Roads and Bridge Corporation contractor to address the problem.
“We have brought a petition to Parliament to urge the House to move with speed to ensure that this issue is sorted out. We also had a meeting with the stakeholders, relevant agencies and owner of the affected school to understand the problems and how they were being addressed,” said Makau.
