MCAs approve motion seeking installation of city electric train transit network

Nairobi Members of the County Assembly have approved a motion that will allow the construction of an electric train transport system to reduce congestion and traffic jams.

Hospital ward MCA Patrick Mbangula Musili introduced the motion seeking to see the development achieved through a joint effort between the national and county government. The lawmaker said the project is set to support environment conservation and reduce air pollution caused by motor vehicles.

“This project will come along way with so many benefits to our people in the city, they will save time due to reliable means of transport, and they will also pay less,” said Musili.

Motion support

Speaker Benson Mutura approved the motion which was supported by over 110 members out of the 122 members of the county assembly. The project is estimated to cost Sh 2billion and upon completion, it is expected to ease movement, boost trade, and create job opportunities.

The speaker urged the county executive members to initiate a multi-agency technical committee to facilitate the implementation of the project in the next three months.  In Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is one of the cities that have installed and commissioned a 17Km electric rail transit line, running from the northern part of the city to its industrial areas in the south.

“This assembly resolves that the county executive should initiate this process with representatives from Ministry of Transport, Treasury, Kenya Railways Authority, National Transport and Safety Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority and Nairobi Metropolitan Services,” Mutura stated.
