Meru County to receive Sh 2bn for construction of a cancer centre

Bill unlocks Sh40 billion grant to counties for development

Meru County government is set to receive Sh 2billion from the national government to fund construction of an ultra-modern cancer centre in the county. Governor Kiraitu Murungi made the announcement and said that project plan is at an advance stage.

“We are holding talks with the national government and Meru has been identified as one of the counties to receive the funding. As at now, the request is being processed at the Treasury and very soon we will have the funds with us. We are hopefull that soon cancer patients from the entire upper eastern region will start receiving treatment at the facility,” said Kiraitu.

Generation Plus Program

To aid the fight against the killer disease, Murungi added, the County government through the office of his wife, Priscilla Murungi has induced the Generation Plus Program to enhance cancer awareness.  The program has aided numerous community level cancer screening activities and cases identified recommended for attention.

While cancer treatment is much easier and effective if detected early, the governor advised people not to wait until the disease manifests, but rather seek early screening services, which are available at the established cancer centre in Meru level five hospital.

“My government is keen in fighting this menace which really impoverishes people. One major step done in connection to this is employment of a clinical oncologist to help the patients who come from the entire upper eastern region seeking treatment and other services,” said Murungi.
