Murang’a County to develop mega water tanks

Sh40m solution for Laikipia water disputes

Murang’a County has kicked off construction of mega water tanks in Kiharu constituency with the aim to boost sanitation and accessibility of clean drinking water.

An American-based charity organization, Can-Do-Kids through its Kenyan Patron Engineer Karanja Wamatangi revealed the report and said Sh 6m has been set aside to build 300,000-litre water tanks in five primary schools. The five primary schools include Kahuhia, Mirichu, Kahithe, Rurii and Kambirwa. Once the tanks are completed, Can-Do-Kids will have done a total of 47 tanks in schools within Kiharu constituency.

“Availability of water in the schools will boost sanitation and relief learners from the hustle of going to school with water jerricans. The tanks are expected to take a month to be completed and it will ensure learners have access to water for drinking, regularly washing of their hands and also cleaning of their classrooms. With improved sanitation, it will also help in containing the spread of coronavirus,” said Wamatangi.

Access to clean water

The patron acknowledged Can-Do-Kids will continue complementing the government’s efforts in the fight against Covid-19 disease especially in schools. The organization, has been donating facemasks to learners with Wamatangi promising to continue donating masks to more learners when the schools reopens next year.

Kiharu Constituency was recently ranked top in Central Kenya for its effort in increasing the residents’ access to clean and safe water using the Constituency Development Fund. According to the area MP Irungu Kang’ata, his constituency is one of the water scarce areas in Murang’a county and it was his plan to reduce the hours the locals spend fetching water.
