Newly built police offices in Mandera County destroyed

Newly built police offices have been destroyed in an explosion at Borehole 11 area of Mandera South constituency, Mandera County.

Police say the structures which had been built by the local CDF fund were destroyed by Al Shabaab militants operating in the area near the Kenya-Somalia border. No injuries have been reported and locals want authorities to take action to tame incidents of such nature.

Kotulo MCA Mohamed Rashid said the attackers arrived in the township on the outskirts of Elwak town riding on motorcycles.

โ€œWe have information that the attackers snatched a motorcycle from a herdsman at Falama and used it to come to Borehole 11,โ€ Mr Rashid said, adding the attack on the camp left the nearest mosque with damages.

Frequent attacks

On several occasions, the town has been under attack by criminal elements. Officials say communication mast that was under construction stalled due to threats to the workers who are non-locals. Last year, workers at a construction site at Borehole 11 survived a shooting by four armed men who raided the site. Workers at a level 3 hospital under construction then by county government escaped narrowly after locals rushed to the scene and confronted the attackers.

This is the latest attack in the area by the terrorists operating from within and outside Kenya. At Guticha village in Mandera North, a police reservist was killed in a night ambush by people believed to be members of the terror group. Bomb experts have also been deployed to Rhamu-Elwak road to find explosive devices planted by the militants.
