Nganyuthe Irrigation Water Project in Nyeri County begins

The Nganyuthe Irrigation Water Project in Nyeri County has commenced. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga officiated the ground breaking ceremony of the project and said his government was committed towards improving the economic well being of residents in marginal areas.

The rehabilitation and upgrading of Nganyuthe Irrigation Water Project will see the laying of 32,820 meters of distribution pipes that will enable residents to access water both for domestic use and for irrigation. The storage tanks will also help in maintaining emergency storage supply and pressure during outages and to provide equalization volume to meet peak demands. Over 1,500 households in Nyeri are set to benefit from the project.

Game changer

Governor Mutahi  said the project will be a game changer to the area which lies in a rain deficit belt saying the emphasis on irrigation fed agriculture will economically empower local people more so the hundreds of unemployed youths.

The project being implemented under the aegis of the Kenya Climate Smart Agricultural Project (KCSAP) will benefit residents of Gatarakwa and Endarasha/ Mwiyogo wards. The work awarded to Transworld Construction Limited will involve construction of water storage tanks which will help in maintaining the required pressure to allow for gravity flow. The water project is being funded by World Bank at a cost of Sh 67million.
