Sh 1.15bn to be spent on Kibra-Southern Bypass

National Treasury in Kenya allocates Sh 182.5bn for roads construction

Sh 1.15bn has been set aside by the government to be spent on the 2km Kibra-Southern Bypass Interchange road in Nairobi County.

Assistant Resident Engineer of the project, Eng. Kelvin Mutemi, from the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), confirmed the report and said that work is progressing well with completion projected to be in September 2022.

According to the Engineer, the road project which began in 2020 will have a four lane-two way dual carriageway road that will be 7.5m wide with 2.0m verges between the curb and the open side drains. Works also include construction of service roads, underpasses, overpasses, bus bays, bridges and pedestrian bridges and footpaths.

โ€œThe road will also have service and slip roads linking to the Southern Bypass interchange, acceleration and deceleration lanes,โ€ said Mr. Mutemi, who is also the Resident Engineer of the Improvement of the Nairobi roads Lot1 projects.

The Engineer also explained that the contractor is unable to proceed with the slip road works from the Southern Bypass onto Missing Link 12 towards Ngong road after some individuals were claiming ownership of the parcels of land along the road abutting the Southern bypass. Encroachment of a road corridor along the Langata road by individuals who have put up three car wash stations along the project road is also hindering the construction of the walkways and drains, as the proprietors are reluctant to move out, claiming they have permits to operate their businesses.

The Kibra-Southern Bypass interchange road will have four bridges which include the Railway overpass expected to be complete in August this year, Mashimoni overpass and Lindi underpass bridges to be ready by July 2021, while River Mutoine road over River bridge is expected to be complete in December this year.
