Betting firm SportPesa has donated over Ksh 800,000 to set up a maternity wing at a local dispensary in Ndarawetta Location in Bomet County.
The company delivered beds to start off the maternity wing project at the Ndarawetta Dispensary, as part of its Maternal Health support initiative launched this month. SportPesa donated six hospital beds with drip stands and will support the construction of a kitchen to serve the maternity wing, which was recently constructed by the management, with support from the community.
“It is important to empower our communities, we will play our part in as we remain committed to supporting maternal health to ensure that women do not have to travel long distances to get professional maternal health care,” said SportPesa CEO Capt. Ronald Karauri.
The SportPesa initiative will see the organization work closely with partners in various Counties to support Maternal Health.
Scarcity of well-equipped maternity facilities
“Women continue to suffer complications due to the scarcity of well-equipped maternity facilities in this area. We thank SportPesa for supporting maternal health care at the grassroots where it matters most. Their investment in this ward means an increased capacity to handle up to 20 deliveries per month, with the number doubling when the facility is fully operational,” Dispensary’s management committee chairman Joseph Sang said.
Ndarawetta Dispensary is a public health facility in Bomet County that was started by the local community in Ndarawetta location in 1972. It is currently under the Bomet County Government and is run by a Management Committee of seven members. The Dispensary serves a catchment area that spans a whole ward, and treats on average 40 clients a day.
