
The government of Uganda has commissioned the 44km Bumbobi-Lwakhakha road that connects Mbale to Kenya. President Yoweri Museveni performed the commissioning ceremony and said the road aims to boost trade between Uganda and Kenya.
The road starts at Bumbobi, a suburb of the city of Mbale and continues through Nabumali and Bubulo to end at Lwakhakha, a total distance of about 46 kilometres. It connects Manafwa District to Mbale, the largest city in the Bugisu sub-region and was upgraded from gravel surface to class 2 bitumen surface. The civil works contract was signed on 26 September 2016. Permission to start work was granted in December 2016.

“The Bumbobi -Lwakhakha road, is part of the national roads network and traverses the Districts of Mbale, Manafwa, and Namisindwa and will promote regional integration and cross border trade with Kenya,” said Prsident Museveni.
The road project was implemented by the Uganda Roads Authority (UNRA). Construction works were undertaken by M/s China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd and supervision services were provided by M/s Studio Galli Ingegneria in Joint Venture with SARI Consulting Ltd and Anchor Engineering Services. It was funded by African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Uganda at a tune of US $42million.
