ZJCC closes Hurlingham site following crane accident

Zhejiang Chenjian Construction (Africa) has announced that the Hurlingham site will remain closed following a crane accident that occurred recently.

The machine collapsed as it was being dismantled by the technicians who had completed their work. Witnesses said 10 workers were dismantling the 60-metre crane when it collapsed and trapped the nine in the rubble.

Two Chinese were among the nine who died when the crane collapsed while one worker survived and was rushed to the hospital following the mid-day accident.The injured was treated and discharged and is recuperating at home said.

Cause of the accident

ZJCC General Manager Zong Xudong said that the site will remain closed as they work with all relevant authorities to determine the cause of the accident. The statement further reads that the company has arranged counselling support for the families of the deceased.

“We are continuing to cooperate and work with all relevant authorities to determine the cause of the accident. In the meanwhile, the site remains closed. We are in touch with the immediate families of the deceased and we are committed to provide them the necessary support,” said Xudong.

Kilimani police boss Muturi Mbogo said those identified were Cheng Xiaoli 33, Chen Jianguo 47, Danson Kahindo 50, Joseph Mutugi 32, Peter Ng’ang’a 24, Dickson Ondieki 30, David Okiki 32, Enock Obara 32 and Stanely Alyssa 24. Officials at the mortuary announced a postmortem exercise will be conducted on the bodies on August 28 before they know the way forward.
